Cheap Paving in Cape Town: Where to Save and Where You Really Should Not

There are two kinds of cheap paving in Cape Town. The first is smart: honest materials, simple layouts, money spent only where it matters. The second is the kind we get called to rip out three winters later. The frustrating part? They often cost nearly the same on day one. This guide is about telling them apart before you spend.

Where you can genuinely save

Choose the humble brick

A plain grey bevel interlock costs a third of premium pavers and, laid well, performs almost identically. Colour and shape are cosmetic; compaction is structural. If the budget forces a choice, the grey brick on a proper base wins every time — the full comparison is in our paving materials guide.

Simplify the layout

Curves, circles, borders and basket-weave patterns all multiply cutting and labour. A straight-laid stretcher bond is the cheapest pattern there is and arguably the most timeless. Save the fancy border for the front entrance where guests actually see it.

Shrink the area, not the quality

A 40m² patio built properly beats a 60m² patio built badly — and you can extend a well-built edge next year. Phasing is the most underrated budget tool in outdoor projects.

Time your buying

Pallet specials at Cashbuild, Build It and Builders Warehouse are real — watch for them (winter months especially, when demand dips), and factor delivery before deciding the deal is a deal. Surplus-stock listings are the other honest bargain; our second-hand bricks guide covers hunting those safely.

Do the unskilled work yourself

Site clearing, old paving removal, rubble runs to the dump — sweat you can genuinely contribute. Ask your installer to quote with and without demolition; the difference is yours to earn.

Where saving costs you double

The base. Always the base.

Every paving failure we repair — sunken wheel tracks, winter dams, rippled patios — traces back to what’s underneath: skipped sub-base, no compaction, sand straight onto Cape Flats topsoil. Redoing a failed driveway costs more than building it right once, because the demolition is now part of the bill. Our post on why driveways crack is essentially a museum of this mistake.

Edge restraints

The classic cheap-quote omission. Without haunched edges, bricks migrate outward and the surface unzips from the border in. It’s a few thousand rand that protects the entire job.

Drainage

Flat paving with nowhere for water to go isn’t cheaper; it’s a deferred invoice that arrives in June. Falls cost nothing extra to get right during construction and a fortune to fix after — see driveway drainage solutions for what proper looks like.

The wrong brick thickness

50mm bricks on a driveway save maybe R30 per square metre and fail under the first heavily loaded bakkie. 60mm minimum under wheels. Non-negotiable.

A sample budget makeover

Real example from a quote revision last summer: a 55m² driveway spec came in at R41,000 with premium cobble-look pavers, circle feature and clay border. Reworked — same base spec, plain charcoal bevels, straight bond, single soldier-course border at the gate only — R27,500. The base didn’t change. The compaction didn’t change. Only the cosmetics did, and from the street it still looks sharp. That’s the template: cut the visible, never the invisible.

Quick answers

What is the cheapest paving option in Cape Town?

Plain grey 60mm bevel interlocks, straight-laid — around R380–R450 per m² properly installed in 2026, or less as a genuine DIY on light-traffic areas.

Is DIY paving worth it?

For paths and small patios with straight edges: yes, if you hire a plate compactor and take the base seriously. For driveways: the machinery, falls and edge work make professional installation the economical option more often than not.

How do I know if a cheap quote is cutting corners?

Ask what’s under the bricks, what thickness the bricks are, and whether edges and rubble are included. Vague answers are the answer. Full checklist in our guide to choosing a paving contractor.
