How Much Does It Cost to Pave a Double Garage Driveway in Cape Town?

Paving a double garage driveway in Cape Town typically costs between R23,000 and R45,000 in 2026, depending on the material. A standard double driveway is around 45 to 60 m², and at R380 to R900 per m² installed, that is where the maths lands.

Below is a worked example on a real 55 m² double driveway — the measurements, the base specification a car and a bakkie actually need, and a line-by-line quote breakdown so you can check the one you have been given.

What a double driveway measures

People underestimate this constantly. A double garage door is about 4.8 to 5m wide. But the driveway is not just the apron in front of the door — it is the run from the street or gate to the garage, plus the turning space.

Layout Typical area
Short apron only (gate close to garage) 25 – 35 m²
Standard suburban double driveway 45 – 60 m²
Long run or driveway with a turning circle 70 – 110 m²

Measure the full width including the strip you actually drive over when swinging in, and the full length from the road edge. Then add the pedestrian path alongside if you are doing it at the same time — it costs far less as part of the same job than as a separate visit.

Cost by material on a 55 m² driveway

Material Rate installed 55 m² total
Bevel / interlock bricks R380 – R520 per m² R21,000 – R28,600
Clay brick pavers R550 – R750 per m² R30,250 – R41,250
Cobblestones R600 – R850 per m² R33,000 – R46,750

For a like-for-like check: a typical 60 m² double driveway in bevel brick lands between R23,000 and R31,000, and the same driveway in clay pavers runs R33,000 to R45,000. The full material-by-material table is in our Cape Town paving prices guide.

You will also see higher rates quoted — R650 to R1,600 per m² — on premium and heavily prepared jobs. Those are not different bricks so much as different amounts of groundwork: demolition, deep base, drainage and slope work. Our 2026 driveway paving cost breakdown explains where the extra goes.

The base spec a double driveway actually needs

This is the single biggest difference between a driveway that lasts and one that ruts in three winters. A patio base will not carry vehicles.

  • 60mm pavers minimum. Not 50mm. Fifty-millimetre bricks save around R30 per m² and fail under the first heavily loaded bakkie. On a 55 m² driveway that is a saving of about R1,650 against the cost of relaying the whole thing.
  • Excavate to a proper depth so there is room for the sub-base without raising your levels above the garage threshold or the road.
  • A compacted crushed stone sub-base, placed and compacted in layers — not one thick dump that only compacts on top.
  • A thin, even bedding sand course. Thick sand is not a substitute for a proper sub-base; it just gives the bricks somewhere to sink into.
  • Edge restraint on every free edge. Without it the bricks creep sideways under braking and turning, and the pattern opens up along the sides within a year.
  • Compact the laid surface and sweep in jointing sand, then compact again. Interlock only works when the joints are full.

If a quote does not say what the sub-base is or how deep it goes, ask before you compare prices. We set out what good preparation looks like in the paving installation prep guide.

A worked quote: 55 m² in charcoal bevel

Here is how a straightforward Northern Suburbs job breaks down. Rates are 2026 Cape Town figures.

Line item Basis Cost
Lift existing paving 55 m² at R90 – R180 per m² R4,950 – R9,900
Rubble removal Skips at R1,200 – R2,000 each R2,400 – R4,000
Supply and lay 60mm bevel pavers 55 m² at R380 – R520 per m² R20,900 – R28,600
Edge restraint / kerbing Per running metre, R220 – R380 R4,400 – R7,600 (20m)
Drainage provision Channel drain at the garage line R4,000 – R12,000

Two things to notice. First, if you are replacing an old concrete slab rather than old paving, demolition jumps to R180 to R350 per m² because of the thickness and any reinforcing — on 55 m² that is R9,900 to R19,250 on its own. Second, drainage is not optional on most Cape Town driveways, and it is the line people delete to make a quote look cheaper.

Why drainage decides the price on a Cape Town driveway

Our rain arrives in the cold months, hard and for days at a time. A double driveway is a large impermeable surface, and everything that falls on it has to go somewhere. If it runs towards the garage door, it goes into the garage. If it runs to the street uncontrolled, you are pushing your stormwater onto the public road, which the City takes a dim view of.

A channel drain across the garage line is the standard answer — typically R1,200 to R2,800 per running metre installed including the connection, so a 4 to 5m double garage line runs roughly R4,800 to R14,000. Budget R3,500 to R12,000 for proper drainage on top of the paving as a rule of thumb. On steep Plattekloof, Vredehoek or Hout Bay driveways where water gathers speed, expect more.

Soil matters too. On Durbanville and Brackenfell clay, water sits and softens the sub-base from underneath. On Cape Flats sand it drains readily but the sand itself migrates if the base is not properly built and restrained.

How long the job takes and what to expect on site

A straightforward 55 m² double driveway is usually a few days of work rather than a few weeks, but the sequence matters more than the total. Demolition and excavation come first and are the noisiest and messiest part. Then the sub-base goes in and gets compacted in layers, which is the day that looks like nothing is happening and is actually the most important one. Laying is fast by comparison — bricks go down quickly once the screed is right.

Plan for the driveway being unusable for the duration, and for a delivery of pallets and stone that needs somewhere to stand. If your only parking is the driveway itself, sort out where the cars go before the crew arrives, not on the morning.

Weather is the other variable. We avoid laying a base into standing water, so a run of heavy winter rain can push a job out by days. It is not padding — compacting saturated material properly is not possible, and a base built wet is a base that settles later.

One last thing worth agreeing up front: what happens to the old bricks. If they are in reasonable condition they have value, and some contractors quietly keep them. Either have them removed as part of the rubble price, keep them yourself for a future pathway, or agree that their resale offsets the demolition line. Just make sure it is written down.

Where you can genuinely save

  • Plain over patterned. Straight-bond charcoal bevels with a single soldier course at the gate looks deliberate and costs far less than circle features and clay borders. We reworked one 55 m² driveway from R41,000 down to R27,500 on exactly that change, with no reduction in the base spec.
  • Keep the existing levels if they work. Re-grading a driveway is expensive.
  • Do the pathway at the same time. The crew, the plate compactor and the delivery are already there.
  • Do not save on: brick thickness, sub-base depth, edge restraint or drainage. Every one of those is a full relay to fix later.

Quick answers

How much does it cost to pave a double garage driveway in Cape Town?

Typically R23,000 to R45,000 in 2026. A standard double driveway is 45 to 60 m², at R380 to R520 per m² for bevel interlock and R550 to R750 per m² for clay pavers, installed.

What thickness paver do I need for a driveway?

60mm minimum. Fifty-millimetre bricks save around R30 per m² and crack under a loaded bakkie, so the saving is wiped out by the first repair.

How big is a typical double driveway in square metres?

Most suburban double driveways measure 45 to 60 m² including the approach and turning space. A short apron in front of the garage door alone is usually 25 to 35 m².
