Artificial grass pricing confuses almost everyone who starts shopping for it, because the number you see advertised — R89 per square metre! — and the number a finished lawn actually costs are separated by base preparation, sand infill and labour. Both numbers are real. They’re just answering different questions.
Here’s the full 2026 picture for Cape Town, from roll-only prices at the sheds through to professionally installed, with the quality differences that explain the spread.

So a 40m² back lawn, done properly with mid-range grass, lands somewhere between R16,000 and R22,000 installed. The same area in budget roll, DIY, might cost R6,000 — and look like it by year three.
Why installation is half the price
An artificial lawn is only as good as what’s underneath: existing lawn stripped, 50–80mm of compacted crusher dust screeded flat, weed membrane, the grass stretched, joined, pegged and dressed with silica sand. Skip the base and you get ripples and drainage problems; skip the infill and the pile flattens in months. It’s the same story as paving — the invisible work is the work.
What separates cheap grass from good grass
Four things, mostly: pile height and density (more yarn per m² = fuller look and better recovery), UV stabilisation (the Cape summer sun destroys unstabilised fibre — this is the difference that shows at year four), fibre shape (C-shape and W-shape fibres stand up; cheap flat fibre lies down and shines), and backing quality. At the sheds you’re mostly seeing budget and low-mid rolls; installers carry the higher grades because we’re the ones fielding the warranty calls.
Is it worth it versus a real lawn?
Depends what you’re solving. No watering in a city that remembers Day Zero, no mowing, green in August shade and February heat — that’s the case for it. The counterarguments (heat underfoot in summer, upfront cost, it is plastic) are real too.
