Get three landscaping quotes in Cape Town and you’ll usually receive: one beautiful PDF with mood boards and a price that makes you sit down, one WhatsApp voice note with a suspiciously round number, and one detailed quote that’s somehow both longer and cheaper than the first. Comparing them feels impossible because they’re not describing the same job. This post is about making them describe the same job.
Why landscaping quotes vary so wildly
Landscaping bundles at least four trades — earthworks, planting, irrigation and hardscaping — and every company weights them differently. One quote includes 300mm of imported topsoil and compost in every bed; another plants into whatever’s there. One prices 20-litre established shrubs; another prices 4-litre youngsters that need two years to catch up. Neither is dishonest. They’re just different products wearing the same word.
Break every quote into these five parts
- Site preparation and earthworks — clearing, levels, soil improvement. The part that determines whether anything else survives. On Cape Flats sand or Constantia clay, soil preparation is not optional — ask exactly what’s being added per square metre.
- Hardscaping — paving, retaining, edging, decking. Usually the biggest single line. Check it against our paving prices guide to see if it’s market-rate.
- Planting — and here, demand the plant list with sizes and quantities. “Indigenous planting throughout” is not a specification; “12 x Searsia crenata 20L, 40 x Agapanthus 4L…” is.
- Irrigation — zones, controller brand, drip vs spray, and who maintains it in year one.
- Lawn — instant roll-on, plugs, or artificial? The price difference between those three is enormous and often buried.
Ask each company to restate their quote against these five headings. The ones worth hiring will do it without complaint — they costed it that way internally anyway.
The questions that reveal the professionals
What happens to plants that die in the first three months? (Establishment guarantees exist — ask.) Who fixes the irrigation leak in month five? How will the garden look in year two versus the render? — an honest landscaper talks about growth rates, not just handover day. And crucially for anything with levels: where does the winter stormwater go? A beautiful terraced garden that sends mud across your driveway every June was designed by someone who’s never worked a Cape winter.
Design-and-build vs design-then-tender
For most residential projects under a few hundred thousand rand, design-and-build with one accountable company is simpler and cheaper — no architect-style margin stacking, one throat to choke. Independent design then tendering the build makes sense for large, complex properties. Just never let the company that quoted highest convince you the process was the problem.
Red flags, briefly
No plant list. No mention of soil preparation. Full payment upfront. “We don’t really do drawings.” A portfolio of photos taken exclusively on handover day — ask to see a garden they built three years ago, same test as we recommend for choosing a paving contractor.
