These figures include materials, base preparation and labour. If a quote comes in far below the bottom of these ranges, the saving is almost always hiding in the base work — and that’s the one part of the job you can’t see once it’s done.
What actually drives the price of paving
1. The base preparation
Roughly a third of a proper paving quote is ground you’ll never see: excavation, a compacted G5 sub-base, and a screeded river sand bed. Cape Town’s winter rain punishes shortcuts here. 2. The material you choose

3. Access and site conditions
A flat, open driveway in Brackenfell is quick work. A sloped Constantia property where every brick gets wheelbarrowed 40 metres past a koi pond is not. Slopes need levelling and sometimes small retaining details; tight access adds labour hours. Expect 10–20% on top for tricky sites.
4. Drainage

To make the numbers concrete: a typical 60m² double driveway in bevel brick lands between R23,000 and R31,000. The same driveway in clay pavers runs R33,000 to R45,000. A 25m² entertainment patio in large-format slabs comes in around R16,000 to R22,500. The costs people forget to budget for
Rubble removal is the big one — ripping out old paving or lawn generates skiploads, and a skip in Cape Town runs R1,200 to R2,000. Then there’s edge restraints (essential on driveways, often excluded from cheap quotes), jointing sand, and sealing if you’ve chosen a porous material. Ask every contractor to state, in writing, whether these are included. It’s the fastest way to make quotes comparable.
Is cheaper paving ever worth it?
Sometimes. A garden path that only carries foot traffic doesn’t need the same base as a driveway that carries a bakkie.
